Victoria Road Primary School

Inspiring a Love of Learning

Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE)

PSHE Intent

 Aims

PSHE is at the core of everything we do at Victoria Road Primary School.

The overarching aim for PSHE is to give our children the knowledge, understanding and emotions to enable them to play an active role in society. We encourage children to have confidence in their own thoughts and believe anything is possible if they put their mind to it. We promote respect and tolerance for those who chose to live their lives differently to others. Having the ability to stay safe and healthy is a high priority and children are equipped to make informed decisions.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Understand and live by our school values: respect, fairness, enjoyment, courage and honesty.
  • Are confident in themselves, understand it is okay to be different and accept others for who they are.
  • Have a strong understanding of the ever changing, diverse world around them and responsibility they have to positively contribute to the school and the wider community as a respectful citizen.
  • Become resilient learners who are willing to take risks and have developed a curriculum to ensure opportunities to develop this.
  • Have an awareness of their own wellbeing and that of others, both physically, mentally and emotionally.
  • Develop the life skills necessary to succeed in the next stage of their education and their lives going forward.
  • Understand and form healthy relationships which enable them to have the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy productive lives and meet their full potential.
  • Have age appropriate knowledge which empowers and protects them in their future lives.

Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives - now and in the future. As part of a whole school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.

We use a published scheme called 'Jigsaw' to deliver our PSHE programme in school and also our Relationships, Health and Sex Educaiton (RHSE). Please read our information below outlining our approach to both.

Commando Joe's:

At Victoria Road Primary School the children participate in 'Commando Joe's' lessons. The children work together to complete a series of missions which are linked to a famous person or story. Commando Joe's is a character education programme which focuses on the development of resilience, empathy, self-awareness, positivity, excellence, communication and teamwork. These areas align with our whole school values which are listed above.

For more information please feel free to watch the video on the Commando Joe's website here: Commando Joe's website.
